NexGen Knee Failure Symptoms
Experiencing pain from your Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex artificial knee? Then you should contact your physician immediately. You may be one of a growing number of patients who are experiencing early knee failure. This is due to problems with the method of attaching the implant to the thigh bone.
Bone Scan
To confirm that your Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex knee is loose, you may need a bone scan or general X-Ray. Many doctors prefer a bone scan for this purpose.
When a replacement knee is loose, the surrounding bone tries to form new bone. This is called remodeling. A bone scan is useful in identifying remodeling.
A bone scan begins by injecting a harmless radioactive substance. Then an image is captured of the bone surrounding the artificial knee. This substance shows up as a "hot spot" where remodeling is occurring. The brighter this hot spot, the more likely it is that the NexGen knee is loose.
Risk of Infection
Replacing an infected artificial knee is more complicated than replacing a noninfected knee. Infection may even make a revision impossible.
Blood tests help check for infection. Your surgeon may also need to aspirate your knee. This involves removing fluid from the joint and sending the contents to a laboratory.
